Kakadu water

The Kakadu National Park is an oasis of warm fresh water pools and water falls. Backpackers World Travel can tell you which tours will take you to the best sites water spots imaginable - actually, you simply can’t imagine how amazing it is until you go - don’t be surprised if our consultants start day-dreaming when they talk about the Kakadu … they are probably imagining the last time they were floating in a Kakadu water pool high up, over looking the Kakadu National Park somewhere … bliss.

Guided Tours of Northern Territory

The crew at Kings Canyon

The best way to navigate yourself around this large beautiful Territory is to get yourself on a guided tour! You may think a tour is too ’safe’ an option, but getting a cool guide means that 1. you don’t miss any of the top spots and 2. you really learn about what you’re seeing around you. A lot of the Australian landscape is ancient and subtle (although the temperatures are extreme!) so  don’t miss out on learning about the plants and animals around you, get on a tour and leave those big fat guide books behind!

Backpackers World Travel specialises in travel for the adventure traveller, which means our customers have a pretty upbeat attitude to travel and we provide the best advice to suit these needs!

That’s me on the left! See you soon, Ivana, Backpackers World Travel, Christchurch NZ

LIZARD SALE IN THE DESERT!?

Ted at Kings Canyon

I love the desert!!! Lizard skin is so so fashionable on LIZARDS out here, still! It’s amazing! To think that i stopped wearing lizard skin as soon as I learnt it came from lizards, and then I stopped wearing fake lizard skin as soon that became dated, but up here in Kings Canyon lizards are still wearing LIZARD print. It’s fabulous. To date I have seen about 8 live Thorny Devils and at least two pickled ones in the outback museum. Thorny Devils are the sweetest looking lizards and they are just one of the many strange Australian animals that influence great fashion (my grandfather models ears by Koala and grandmother does a really great emu catwalk-walk). If you’re after travel with a bit of a difference, come at see the Backpackers World Travel crew to put the adventure back into your travel.Ted, Backpackers World Travel Product Manager.

KINGS CANYON OASIS

Kings Canyon

They tell you to drink at least a litre of water per hour in the desert, and even though I did that, arriving at this water hole in Kings Canyon was just pure bliss! I could have stayed there all day - in fact it think i almost did, getting away just in time to see the sunset over the canyon … it was spectacular. He’s a pic of me and one of my Backpackers World Travel crew on a Team Leaders conference. There are other company’s that’ll tell you “they know because they go”, well my crew really do know everything you need to know about travelling in Australia and the Northern Territory is one of our favourite destinations! Check out the store locations on this site and come and see us now to book all your travels!Cheers, Steve, Area Manager, Sydney

DARWIN is where it all begins!

Darwin ariel

Darwin city from the air

My favourite city outside of Sydney is Darwin! It has a hugely cosmopolitan feel with travellers from all over the world congregating there either on their way into Australia or on their way out! The one thing everyone has in common is; a different pace of life! Darwin has all the joys of a big city but it’s so chilled out, there is no way you can feel anything but on holidays! The streets are lined with outdoor pubs, cafes and restaurants, some with big fans spraying cool mist over you. The uniqueness of this modern city in the combination of tropical and desert heat is awesome! From Darwin you can do a variety of tours to the Kakadu National Park and even a day trip to Litchfield National Park. See the Backpackers World Travel crew at 21 Knuckey St, near McDonalds for the best local travel advice!

The Northern territory is UNREAL!

Kakadu  The Northern Territory

If you’ve ever wanted to see a land with so so much contrast, this is the place. From the lush green vegetation, with an abundance of wild animals roaming the place, in the Top end to the harsh red landscape of the red centre.

When I went to the Northern Territory I was expecting to see the landscape that I had heard was so great. Clearly that was an understatement, looking out over sweeping plains from the Ubirr lookout then seeing huge domes in 1 direction and Australia’s one of the counties best natural feature, Uluru, in the other,

With all this natural beauty comes the cultural significance which I knew of but was unaware to what extent. Every piece of landscape and every monument has a story and some even have these stories written into them such as Barramundi gorge and Ubirr. It was easy to learn about the land because there was always someone willing to tell their story. You may even experience some aboriginal traditions, like burning the bush, so that the land stays manageable for the tribes still living there.

Theres no way you can do justice to the Northern territory by describing the things you’ve seen. Everyone takes different things out of their trip, but it’s definitely not something you forget in a hurry.

Cheers,

Katherine GorgeKatherine Gorge, Northern Territory

There is a very laid back and chilled out atmosphere throughout Northern Territory. The people are very friendly and no-one is in a rush.

One of my most favourite spots in the Northern Territory is Mataranka - a crystal clear oasis in the middle of nowhere, great to soak those weary bones after long day in the car or bus, make sure you check it out. Oh and the Jumping Crocodiles in Darwin are amazing, make sure you get on the top deck and catch a photo right down to the Croc’s tonsils when in mid flight.

Get out to the real ‘heart’ of the Territory

Camel Race in Alice SpringsCamel Race in Alice Springs

Someone once said, “We wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfilment”, well there’s nowhere more fulfilling than the Northern Territory – sights and sounds native to only this very special part of Australia. Here’s my dream itinerary…first I would get out to the real ‘heart’ of the Territory, the Red Centre, and try everything at least once! I would ride a camel across the rugged landscapes at sunset, visit with the local aboriginals and taste-test some genuine ‘bush tucker’, and camp out under the vast southern sky – where the constellations would seem bigger and brighter than anywhere else in the world! Then heading north, I would travel into Kakadu National park – hiking through gorges to view ancient Aboriginal Rock Art, before cooling off under stunning waterfalls – always keeping an eye out for any hungry crocs!

A Town Like Alice…

Camel Race in Alice Springs

Camel Race in Alice Springs

Got some spare time in Alice Springs before or after visiting the Red Centre? Here’s what I do when I’m in this great outback town:

Camel Rides are an Alice Springs must! Frontier Camels do sunrise and sunset trips including breakfast or dinner, both from Alice Springs and Uluru.

Outback Ballooning is a great way to see the amazing outback landscapes. Why not try a 30 or 60 minute flight with gourmet breakfast at sunrise!

Quad Biking is for the adventurous - Outback Quad Adventures do 2.5, 3.5 hour and overnight trips through the rugged desert.

Flora and Fauna is in abundance at the Alice Springs Desert Park, where traditional Aboriginal guides will teach you about their culture, as well as introduce you to the local animals and plants unique to Australia!

Aboriginal Culture is best experience in the true outback. Red Centre Dreaming does a dinner and show with indigenous dance and culture. The Aboriginal Dreamtime and Bushtucker Tour combines your morning tea (real bush tucker!) with culture and the natural environment.

Star Gazing is at its absolute best in the outback - no city smog to interrupt the view. See the night sky like you have never seen it before. Check out the Spirit of the Night Sky presentation at the Milky Way Cafe, for those of you interested in a bit of astrology with an evening meal!

Remember to visit the Backpackers World Travel Store, located on the corner of Todd and Gregory Terrace, Alice Springs, to get any more local advice or to book any of these fantastic experiences!

The Northern Territory is a must!

Katherine Gorge Bush WalkKatherine Gorge Bush Walk

The Northern Territoy is such an amazing place and a trip to Australia would not be the same without it. If you have the time it is well worth the visit to see the real outback Australia - full of colourful culture unique to the Red Centre.
