I love the desert!!! Lizard skin is so so fashionable on LIZARDS out here, still! It’s amazing! To think that i stopped wearing lizard skin as soon as I learnt it came from lizards, and then I stopped wearing fake lizard skin as soon that became dated, but up here in Kings Canyon lizards are still wearing LIZARD print. It’s fabulous. To date I have seen about 8 live Thorny Devils and at least two pickled ones in the outback museum. Thorny Devils are the sweetest looking lizards and they are just one of the many strange Australian animals that influence great fashion (my grandfather models ears by Koala and grandmother does a really great emu catwalk-walk). If you’re after travel with a bit of a difference, come at see the Backpackers World Travel crew to put the adventure back into your travel.Ted, Backpackers World Travel Product Manager.

They tell you to drink at least a litre of water per hour in the desert, and even though I did that, arriving at this water hole in Kings Canyon was just pure bliss! I could have stayed there all day - in fact it think i almost did, getting away just in time to see the sunset over the canyon … it was spectacular. He’s a pic of me and one of my Backpackers World Travel crew on a Team Leaders conference. There are other company’s that’ll tell you “they know because they go”, well my crew really do know everything you need to know about travelling in Australia and the Northern Territory is one of our favourite destinations! The Northern Territory
If you’ve ever wanted to see a land with so so much contrast, this is the place. From the lush green vegetation, with an abundance of wild animals roaming the place, in the Top end to the harsh red landscape of the red centre.
When I went to the Northern Territory I was expecting to see the landscape that I had heard was so great. Clearly that was an understatement, looking out over sweeping plains from the Ubirr lookout then seeing huge domes in 1 direction and Australia’s one of the counties best natural feature, Uluru, in the other,
With all this natural beauty comes the cultural significance which I knew of but was unaware to what extent. Every piece of landscape and every monument has a story and some even have these stories written into them such as Barramundi gorge and Ubirr. It was easy to learn about the land because there was always someone willing to tell their story. You may even experience some aboriginal traditions, like burning the bush, so that the land stays manageable for the tribes still living there.
Theres no way you can do justice to the Northern territory by describing the things you’ve seen. Everyone takes different things out of their trip, but it’s definitely not something you forget in a hurry.

There is a very laid back and chilled out atmosphere throughout Northern Territory. The people are very friendly and no-one is in a rush.
One of my most favourite spots in the Northern Territory is Mataranka - a crystal clear oasis in the middle of nowhere, great to soak those weary bones after long day in the car or bus, make sure you check it out. Oh and the Jumping Crocodiles in Darwin are amazing, make sure you get on the top deck and catch a photo right down to the Croc’s tonsils when in mid flight.

Someone once said, “We wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfilment”, well there’s nowhere more fulfilling than the Northern Territory – sights and sounds native to only this very special part of Australia. Here’s my dream itinerary…first I would get out to the real ‘heart’ of the Territory, the Red Centre, and try everything at least once! I would ride a camel across the rugged landscapes at sunset, visit with the local aboriginals and taste-test some genuine ‘bush tucker’, and camp out under the vast southern sky – where the constellations would seem bigger and brighter than anywhere else in the world! Then heading north, I would travel into Kakadu National park – hiking through gorges to view ancient Aboriginal Rock Art, before cooling off under stunning waterfalls – always keeping an eye out for any hungry crocs!

The Northern Territoy is such an amazing place and a trip to Australia would not be the same without it. If you have the time it is well worth the visit to see the real outback Australia - full of colourful culture unique to the Red Centre.
